The company explained that it needed to switch to a more seamless payment solution as the number and amount of cash transactions increases. The device is GSM-enabled and will be able to send cash payment and delivery data simultaneously. It is important to note that the device isn’t at all a “Square-ish” device. It uses the point-of-sale device (picture above) which we usually see in restaurants and stores. The newly released Analytix BI report "South Africa Brand Report: Consumers of Infant Cereal", shows that one-third of people that had personally purchased infant cereal in the past four weeks were male, i.e. more than one million males, a significant number that should be acknowledged by marketers in this product segment.
ccording to the latest AMPS 2011A data, 3.1 million South African adults (15+ years) had personally bought infant cereal in the past four weeks. As shown in the graph below, the percentage of infant cereal purchasers (Adults 15+ years) had increased from 8.2% (adults 15+ years) in 2009 to 9.1% in 2011. Nestlé and home-grown brand Purity are the top two brands in this market segment.

Interestingly, the largest segments of infant cereal users were Single Parent Families (33%) or Young Families (27%). Noteworthy, however, is the declining proportion of infant cereal purchasers in the Young Family segment between 2009 and 2011 (-5%), while the proportion of Mature Singles had grown by 2% during the same period. This might be explained by the growing strong support of grandparents, especially among lower-income households.


Infant cereal is generally the first solid food for babies fed by mothers; but against common perception not solely purchased by this group. Given the fact that the purchase of food and feeding of infants are commonly the role of the mother or female in the household, it is significant that the males comprised 34% of purchasers who had bought infant cereal in the past four weeks.

Interesting as well is the varied gender profile at a brand level. The graph below illustrates that in 2011, 39% of Purity Cereals purchasers were male compared to only 25% of Purity Mabele purchasers.
